Yelp’s Grand Experiment

I can now add the title “Event Planner” to my resume! I am thrilled, I always dreamed about throwing fun parties for a living but I didn’t actually think it would pan out. I did a bit of trade show marketing at my last few jobs but somehow Interactive Voice Response and Wind Turbine related events just doesn’t sound as sexy to the parties I throw now.

My last event was held at Trademark Drink + Eat, an eatery dedicated to handcrafted cocktails and adding innovative new spins to classic American comfort food. Because of the restaurant’s proximity to the US Patent & Trade Office and it’s science geek chic decor, I decided to theme the party “Yelp’s Grand Experiment.”

Guests noshed on nibbles such as a shrimp bouquet topped with beet mousse and cantaloupe caviar (served in petri dishes!), pretzel bites served with cheese melted on a Bunsen burner, beakers filled with apple cider floats, and candy bacon. We also hosted a cocktail lab where Yelpers learned a few tricks of the trade and were then invited to take a hand in creating their own cocktail mixes.

Enough talking…I’ll let the photos talk for themselves!

Hopefully, my wedding will be just as fun!

2013: Working it!

Rob and I signed up for our first race together!  The thing is….

  • It’s indoors
  • It’s only 1k
  • It’s a beer walk

Judgement aside, it was a lot of fun and a great way to spend a random Sunday together. I tend to get really antsy in the winter time so we try to plan a lot of activities to keep me from going crazy.

We were given twenty tasting tickets but we could only get through half of them before giving up and crying “Mama!”. We are not the once virile, twenty-something year olds we thought we were. The 1k ended with an ultra awkward dance party where 40 year old men did the Wobble with other 40 year old men…and nobody else.

We did however discover a lot of great, new beers. A few favorites being:

  • Bold Rock Virginia Apple Hard Cider
  • Tuppers Hop Pocket Ale
  • Scotch de Silly
  • Ommegang Rare Vos
  • Ommegang Witte
  • Bison Chocolate Stout
  • Port City IPA
  • Boulevard Tripel

The day ended with a trip to Sakuramen in Dupont for a steaming hot bowl of noodle soup with our two favorite people whose names start with U’s.

Chasin’ Tails

I was lucky enough to check out the soft opening at the much-anticipated Chasin’ Tails Restaurant yesterday and all I have to say about it is…

As a seafood aficionado, I have never had the chance to fall in love with crawfish.  My pops had 30 lbs of fresh crawfish flown in from Louisana last spring and I was a bit underwhelmed — now I know why.  It was missing that hot, spicy, tangy seasoning that makes the inside of your mouth pucker for days. Luckily for me, Chasin’ Tails had the secret ingredient and it is less than a hop, skip and a jump away from my office building in Falls Church!

I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves:

Everything I consumed from the gator bites, to the shrimp, to the lushious, lushious crawfish was fresh, juicy and perfectly seasoned.  I have a feeling that this will be my new seafood bar of choice since our last trip to the raw food bar at Dogwood Tavern ended up being a big fail.  Rob, Kristina, Andrew, Timmy, Linda, Sam, Kat, Paul, and Carlo – – I hope you have your seafood bibs ready cus things are about to get CRAYYYY!

Old Town Boutique District Warehouse Sale Finds

Last week, I stopped by the Old Town Boutique District Warehouse Sale at the George Washington Masonic Memorial with my mother and sister.  It was SUPER CROWDED but the whole experience was worth it for this piece alone.  Say hello to my slightly new Marc Jacobs Wallet from Mint Condition Consignment.

Original Price: $295
Sale Price: $135

I am in lurve.  I wasn’t even planning on spending that much money but that day but it spoke to me.  Plus the price point was a-mah-zing.  Other purchases included:

Swarvoski Crystal Earrings
Original Price: $25
Sale Price: $15
Purchased from Fornash

Rabbit Fur Hat (I didn’t realize it was rabbit fur until after I bought it — sorry!)
Original Price: $45
Sale Price: $11

All-in-all I am pretty happy with all my purchases and all of them except the earrings fell in my new “don’t buy anything unless its 40% off or more” rule that I made up.  If you are interested in checking out another sample sale,  Gilt City will be hosting one downtown this Saturday.  For more information click here.

Suburbanette is Newsworthy!

The last time I was quoted in the newspaper, I was being interviewed by the Centre View (Centreville’s finest publication) for being a part of a test group of kids who were trying out new healthy lunch options for Fairfax County Public Schools.  Remember those awesome teriyaki chicken nugget lunches?  You can thank me for that.

Anyways, it’s been a loooooong time since I said anything newsworthy, so I was really happy to find out that The Washington Post was able to feature one of my quotes in their recent article “40 Dishes Every Washingtonian Must Try.

Check out a screen cap of all my glory below:

Salsa Bar Date Night

Feeling a bit saucy, Rob and I decided to go to a salsa bar for our random Thursday night date.

From the mild tomatillo to the hot-and-spicy chiltomate, these condiments did not disappoint!

To cool ourselves from the muy caliente salsa, we helped ourselves to their open bar featuring old-fashioned cane sugar soda from Boylans.

Best date ever!

Our Wild Fatastic Ride

I am temporarily working in DC for the month while my office goes through an extensive renovation.  My new workspace is located approximately two blocks from Rob’s office which means our new routine includes:

– Seeing who can wake up first to hog up our one person bathroom
– Driving to work together
– Eating lunch together / Or eating a virtual lunch together at our desks
– Driving home together
– Eating dinner  or going to happy hour together
– Debating about going to the gym together or watching our favorite shows together
– Going to bed together

I thought by the end of the first day I would be ready to punch my boyfriend (fiance!) in the face but it has actually been really nice.

Some of the stops we visited on our slow descent into diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure include:

Nando’s Peri Peri – – Our favorite South African roasted chicken spot!  It’s so good that you will want to pass up your only brother’s engagement dinner!  Also, a little Suburbanette bird just told me that it will be opening it’s first Virginia location at Pentagon Row this summer!

Crumb’s Cupcake – – Rob called me excitedly to let me know that the new shop right next to his office was giving out cupcakes!  The blustering cold did not turn me away from the thought of a nice, moist, fluffy cupcake with my favorite flavor of icing on top (FREE).

Barcode — Best happy hour in the city!  Tuesdays is half priced bottle night so a few girlfriends and  I was able to enjoy a smooth Argentinian pinot noir for the sweet, sweet price of $15.  Rob ordered the banana bread beer which I am happy to report lived true to its namesake.

Pho Sate – Rob and I found ourselves back in the burbs’ after visiting Baby Willow in the hospital.  Let me tell you there is nothing that soothes frazzled nerves like a hot bowl of steaming pho.  For more information on my favorite pho spot click here.

Wake Me Up Before You Bulgogo!

I recently featured Chef Frank and his Korean taco team on my post about budding underground food scene.  I am pleased to announce that Bulgogo will be dishing up their delicious bulgogi tacos and other good eats at the Chinese New Year Festival this Saturday at Luther Jackson Middle School from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.

This free event will also feature a traditional New Year dragon dance, Chinese cooking lessons, kung fu demonstrations and an array of cultural dances from Southeast Asia.
