2013: Working it!

Rob and I signed up for our first race together!  The thing is….

  • It’s indoors
  • It’s only 1k
  • It’s a beer walk

Judgement aside, it was a lot of fun and a great way to spend a random Sunday together. I tend to get really antsy in the winter time so we try to plan a lot of activities to keep me from going crazy.

We were given twenty tasting tickets but we could only get through half of them before giving up and crying “Mama!”. We are not the once virile, twenty-something year olds we thought we were. The 1k ended with an ultra awkward dance party where 40 year old men did the Wobble with other 40 year old men…and nobody else.

We did however discover a lot of great, new beers. A few favorites being:

  • Bold Rock Virginia Apple Hard Cider
  • Tuppers Hop Pocket Ale
  • Scotch de Silly
  • Ommegang Rare Vos
  • Ommegang Witte
  • Bison Chocolate Stout
  • Port City IPA
  • Boulevard Tripel

The day ended with a trip to Sakuramen in Dupont for a steaming hot bowl of noodle soup with our two favorite people whose names start with U’s.

Exciting News! Read All About It!

The hashtag #onegirltwo jobs no longer applies to me! I am now a bonafide full-time Yelp Community Manager. This means a few  things:

#1) I will actually get to sleep more than four hours at night (I think people at my corporate full-time job were starting to think I had narcolepsy!)
#2) More regular blog posts for your enjoyment. Double the Kimberly, double the fun!
#3) I will FINALLY be able to play with the new Nintendo 3DS game I got last Thanksgiving and have been saving for a rainy day.
#4) Goodbye blazers…..helllooooo yoga pants! I’ve been rocking this pair from Lucy the most. If they are good enough for my fake BFF Mindy Kaling than they are good enough for me!

Needless to say:

Cheers to new exciting and scary territories!

Life After Hodgkin’s Disease

It has been approximately seven or so years since I was first diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease, a type of blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system. I was treated for approximately six months with a mixture of chemotherapy and radiation. My regular scans have been showing up clear and everything has been pretty peachy keen for the most part. I recently did some routine blood work when they discovered that my thyroid levels have been operating on the slow side. The doctor referred me to a specialist who decided to monitor my levels for a while to decide what the next course of action should be. I just received the news that the next course of action is to start treating it with medicine.

It should not be a big deal, I just will need to take a pill every day for the rest of my life. It will help with all the classic slow thyroid symptoms I have been having such as: being cold all the time, tiredness, and weight gain. They believe that my thyroid problems are a direct effect from the radiation I had to my neck and chest area. I had always known that this would be a possibility but it was something that I did not think I would have to worry about so soon. I’m pretty bummed, especially when I found out that I have to start limiting my intake of seaweed. Trader Joe’s dried seaweed snacks are my jam!

On the bright side, maybe I will lose weight for my wedding?!?!

Our Engagement Party

My family threw Rob and I an engagement party at Paradise Springs Winery last weekend and it could have not been more perfect.  A large storm hit the Virginia area a few days beforehand leaving my parents and myself without power.  But with a little bit of ingenuity and hard work we were able to make it work out!

Rob is a huge fan of pies so his mother ordered an assortment of twelve different pies from Mom’s Apple Pie Company  to create the pie bar of his dreams!  Everybody enjoyed all of the different flavors but it seems like their chocolate pecan pie was the resounding winner.

My mom’s homemade bean salad was a big hit with all of the vegetarians and gluten-free people attendance while all of the carnivores DEVOURED her jalapeno chicken meatballs with the quickness.  Kat’s homemade paper fans provided a welcome breeze in the 100 degree weather and Kristina’s sweet burlap sign brought the whole rustic theme together.

Simply put, my family rocks.

Loose Thread

It’s been a busy last couple of weeks for me!  Here is what I’ve been up to!

Practicing laughing yoga at the Love Your Body Wellness Day at Reston Town Center.

Campaigning with Kal Penn (you may recognize him as Kumar from Harold and Kumar go to White Castle)

Posing with my sister at the Nguyen-Zamora wedding

Enjoying my own private fireworks show on the Fourth of July

Drinking scotch and eating biscuits at the British Embassy (courtesy of  H.R.H. Prince Charles)

Getting down at the Tinner Hill Blues Festival opening party

Getting in tune with island life at 876 Cafe

Dressing my boyfriend up in silly outfits

Staying cool with a refreshing cup of freshly squeezed sugar cane juice at VietFest2012

Also, do you know how funny my dad is?  Besides being a three stripe black belt he is also the VietFest 2012 Pho Eating Champion!  Coming in at 1 minute 39 seconds he beat a bunch of young bucks who have been training for weeks.  My dad didn’t even have plans to enter the contest, he just happened to have an extra twenty dollars to pay the registration fee and went at it.  People’s noses were bleeding as they were eating the steaming hot bowl of soup on a 95 degree day but my dad was the consummate professional.  I could not be prouder. Ain’t nothing but a G thang baby!

My Not So Little Brothers

My little brothers are not so little anymore!  They graduated from the sixth grade and are heading to middle school next September!  I couldn’t be more proud of them — they are growing up to be such sweet, darling, funny young men.

Pre-school graduation

Sixth grade graduation!

Summer haircuts!  12 years later they still have the same mischievous looks on their faces that they when they were kids.

I am absolutely obsessed with my brothers and I am not afraid to show it!

Sippin Crist-o with Some Freaks from Frisco

It’s only six months into 2012 and I’ve already got to travel all over California — San Diego, LA, up and down the OC and as of last week, San Francisco!  I feel so incredibly blessed.  If you have not heard, I recently accepted a job with Yelp.com as a Community Manager/Marketing Director for Northern Virginia.  I have been eying this job since I was a fresh-out-of-college intern so to me this is a dream come true.  Although, I will be based in Northern Virginia, Yelp gave me the opportunity to fly out to their headquarters in San Francisco and my brief trip out there was nothing short of amazing.  It was so exciting to be in a young, fresh atmosphere with tons of people who are passionate about what they do every day.  They put me up at the W Hotel which is a few blocks away from their main office and let me tell you — I am never going back to the Holiday Inn again!  Chingy is trippin’, the W is where its at.

I didn’t get the chance to take too many photos because I was trying to live in the moment but here are a few that I managed to take!

This picture describes exactly how I felt for the entire four days I was there!

Yelp has an onsite kegerator with rating system that is powered by an Ipad. It is one of many things that I love about the company.

Can't believe I'm finally here!

Fantastic comfort food at Slow Club in the Mission

Was able to continue my yoga practice at the San Francisco airport! How cool is that?

Two beds all to myself! Coming from a one bedroom apartment this place was a dream.

Classic San Francisco along with the Golden Gate Bridge, Full House home, and Rice-a-Roni

No trip to California is complete without a steaming hot bowl of ramen.

Two Months Worth of Loose Thread

Hola Amigos!

As you may (or may have not noticed) I recently took a month and a half long hiatus from blogging.  I didn’t mean to do it but life just got in the way.  I will have to do a pretty big “Loose Threads” post to catch you up but here are the highlights of where I’ve been!

I went on a nine day So-Cal trip (the longest vacation I’ve ever had in my adult life)!

I attended a fashion show benefiting the Washington Humane Society at the National Building Museum.  Read my recap here.

I celebrated Easter with a lovely dinner at my sister Kat‘s house!  Rob got me this Easter basket full of candy I can’t eat.

I got to visit my cousins’ in Las Vegas for the first time since they moved there two years ago.

Rob became a godfather to the cutest baby in the WHOLE world!

I went on a cupcake crawl with for Little Miss Cupcake’s birthday (not pictured).  Check out my reviews for The Sweet Lobby and Sticky Fingers Bakery.

I staged a fake birthday party for Kassie since she was so upset she didn’t get invited to my original (adult-oriented) birthday festivities.

Oh by the way! I turned 28! My house was full of flowers for two full weeks!  Thank you to my friends at Nintendo and non-brand affiliated friends haha.

I hosted a Mother’s Day dinner on my apartment rooftop for my mom, my sister Kat, and Rob’s mom!

I officially realized that I have the cutest little family in the world.  See above for proof.

For the first time ever, I wore a watch and painted my nails!  Can I be a fashion blogger now?!

I cheered Rob, Timmy and Roel on as they participated in the annual DC Dragon Boat Race (Gold medal winners baby!).

I got to spend a lovely day at Paradise Springs Winery with my sisters and mom!

I met a bunch of fun fashion bloggers at the Baby Bash and Bling Media Event featuring Tia Mowry!

Smoothie Operator

Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to volunteer with one of the contestants of the “Next Food Network Star” with the Junior League of Washington’s Kids in the Kitchen event! My ovaries were working overtime with all of the images of cute kids in their aprons and chef hats getting psyched to learn about my favorite subject — food!

The booth next to me did a demonstration on kale smoothies and I was instantly intrigued. I love kale but in a smoothie — NO WAY! I had heard the benefits of “going green” in Kimberly Snyder’s blog (her patented glowing green smoothie is one of the “it” drinks for celebrities) but I did not think it would taste good. Well, I was wrong — one free sample and I was hooked. In fact, I went to Trader Joe’s that very day to stock up on ingredients.

I blended everything in my cheap-o Bella Cucina personal blender with fantastic results! Even Rob enjoyed it and he has an aversion to anything with nutrients in it. He was amazed that there was no dairy products in it because it was so creamy and smooth.  With that – – I present to you my recipe for my own ghetto green smoothie!

Kimberly Van’s Ghetto Green Smoothie
-Handful of Kale/Spinach (Spinach blends easier with crappy blenders and has a more neutral taste)
– 5-10 seedless grapes
– 1 ripe banana
– Enough purified water to fill 1/3 of blending container
– 10 frozen pineapple chunks

Blend until smooth. Pour into a pretty glass and enjoy!

Why is this good for you?
– No added sugar or fruit juice
– Chock full o’ vitamins
– Spinach or Kale is known for its skin firming properties
– Nutrition experts recommend that you drink this smoothie in the morning to help with any digestive problems
